TWELVE Days of Christmas

From 1558 until 1829, Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote the carol, the twelve Days of Christmas, as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments

Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

Message from the Great Southern Trail.

On Friday Dec.7th 2012 a new bridge was installed over the Athea Road at Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick to provide access to the latest 3km of the Great Southern Trail[GST]. Forty kilometres of the GST has now been developed between Rathkeale and the Kerry Border [at Rathoran townland]. These works have been undertaken by Limerick County Council with National Cycle Network funding. The GST group welcomes this initiative by the County Council and now looks forward to the continuation of the Greenway into County Kerry to the finali termini at Tralee and Fenit. At Limerick County Council level the project was led by Anthony Coleman with the resurfacing being supervised by Pádraig Vallelly and Richard Gleeson. The overall Consulting Engineer was Tadhg McGillicuddy who also co-ordinated the installation of three new bridges. These were manufactured and installed by Fergus O' Keeffe, Kerry Mechanical Engineering, Kilmorna [over the Athea road at Abbeyfeale Station]; Pádraig Nolan, Nolan Steel, Castleisland [over the River Oolagh outside Abbeyfeale] and Mike Condon Trackcare, Devon Road, Templeglantine [over a farm roadway at Purt, Abbeyfeale].

The GST will now host the first walk along the new route on Thu. 27th December at 2.15pm from the old Abbeyfeale Station. The round trip is 4 miles and refreshments will be provided afterwards at the adjacent Railway Bar, Abbeyfeale. All the faithful supporters of the GST over the past 21 years are cordially invited as are all those who worked so diligently on the new extension and completed the job so quickly. Tá fáilte romhaibh go léir!

Coach House Travel are kindly providing a complimentary bus at 1.30pm from Rathkeale Old Station [now the Palatine Museum] and which will pick up at Ardagh[Church] 1.40pm, Newcastle West[Square]1.50pm and Templeglantine[Church] 2pm. Those travelling by public transport to Abbeyfeale should take the 12.35pm bus from Limerick; 1pm from Tralee or 1.30pm from Listowel

COSTS: Shannon Airport is a designation as a diversion airport for mechanical and medical emergencies over the North Atlantic, this costs about E2 million per year, it is seldom used. How more designated groups are working in various state departments? Cost of planning, regulations and delays to keep regulators happy is stifling real jobs in this country.

ANCESTORS: Mulvihilll's of Gurtomasillihy

My great-grandmother was Ellen Mulvihill (1853-1939) of Gurtomasillihy, Moyvane. She was baptized June 4, 1853 in Moyvane, daughter of John Mulvihill (1812-?) and Bridget Kenelley (1824-?).

Ellen married Cornelius Shine of Gortdromasillihy July 30, 1875 in Moyvane. They had 10 children, 4 of whom emigrated to the USA.

John Mulvihill (1812-?) and Bridget Kennelley had 4 children that I could find, Ellen (1853-1939), Cornelius (1855-?), Honora ((1841- ?) and Patrick (1841-?)

John (1812-?) was the son of John Mulvihill and Mary O'Connor. I am interested in comparing notes with anyone connected to these folks or to the Moyvane.

VISIT to Moyvane; Senior Editor of The Huffington Post, Craig Kanalley recently journeyed from the US to Ireland to explore his family heritage, his family came from Co Limerick and claim Kerry ancestry, he was in Moyvane and Ballylongford also discussing facts about relations.

Sunday November 25th What is heaven?

Heaven is the endless moment of love. Nothing more separates us from God, whom our soul loves and has sought our whole life long. Together with all the angels and saints we will be able to rejoice forever in and with God.

If you have ever observed a couple look at each other lovingly or seen a baby nursing who looks for their mother’s eyes as though it wanted to store up every smile forever, then you have some inkling of heaven. To be able to see God face to face-that is like one, single, never-ending moment of love. [from YouCat, Youth Catechism of Catholic Church §158]

Eymard was always busy, loved to do jobs, even as a child he helped his father plant cabbage, after helping his next-door neighbour with his planting, he took some home and planted them to the surprise of his Dad, as to where he got the plants. Thank you was always on his lips, hundreds were at Knockanure Church to say good bye and thank him for the way he touched so many live. Sean South was played at his graveside as it was his favourite tune.

THOUGHT: In the mountains the rushing streams make their own river bed along which they flow; but in the plains men have to work hard to make canals, in order that the water may flow along them. It is just the same with those who live upon the heights with God. The Holy Spirit streams through them freely, while those who give little time to prayer and communion with God have to find their way with much labour and effort.

FLU: University of Michigan has established the largest digital collection of materials relating to the 1918 influenza epidemic in the United States.

HITLER: Oct. 15th 1924, Adolf Hitler, leader of the German anti-Semites and defeated general of the Bavarian Beer Revolution, will not be permitted to enter Austria. If he crosses the border he will be interned and held for deportation. Hitler, was imprisoned in Bavaria, is to be deported to Austria, his former country. The Austrian government say that Hitler’s absence from Austria for twelve years means he has lost his citizenship.

From the speech, Citizenship in a Republic, 1910

By Theodore Roosevelt

The very last thing that an intelligent and self-respecting member of a democratic community should do is to reward any public man because that public man says he will get the private citizen something to which this private citizen is not entitled, or will gratify some emotion or animosity which this private citizen ought not to possess.

Let me illustrate this by one anecdote from my own experience. A number of years ago I was engaged in cattle-ranching on the great plains of the western United States. There were no fences. The cattle wandered free, the ownership of each being determined by the brand; the calves were branded with the brand of the cows they followed. If on the round-up an animal was passed by, the following year it would appear as an unbranded yearling, and was then called a maverick. By the custom of the country these mavericks were branded with the brand of the man on whose range they were found. One day I was riding the range with a newly hired cowboy, and we came upon a maverick. We roped and threw it; then we built a little fire, took out a cinch-ring, heated it at the fire; and the cowboy started to put on the brand. I said to him, “It is So-and-so’s brand,” naming the man on whose range we happened to be. He answered: “That’s all right, boss; I know my business.” In another moment I said to him: “Hold on, you are putting on my brand!” To which he answered: “That’s all right; I always put on the boss’s brand.” I answered: “Oh, very well. Now you go straight back to the ranch and get what is owing to you; I don’t need you any longer.” He jumped up and said: “Why, what’s the matter? I was putting on your brand.” And I answered: “Yes, my friend, and if you will steal for me you will steal from me.”

Now, the same principle which applies in private life applies also in public life. If a public man tries to get your vote by saying that he will do something wrong in your interest, you can be absolutely certain that if ever it becomes worth his while he will do something wrong against your interest.

HISTORY: BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY 1913-21

BUROSTAIREMILEATA1913-21

No. W.S. 1,272 STATEMENT OF JAMES COLLINS, T.D.

Convent Terrace, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick.

“I was born in the parish of Abbeyfeale on the 31st

October, 1900, and was one of a family of three boys and

three girls. My parents, who were farmers, sent me to

the local national school until I was fourteen years of

age, after which I attended a private school run by a man

named Mr. Danaher. While attending the private school,

I became an apprentice to a chemist in the town of

Abbeyfeale whose name was Richard B. Woulfe. After

completing my apprenticeship, I was retained in his

employment for some years until I was forced to go on the

run during the Black and Tan terror.

Mr. Woulfe's wife was Miss Cathie Colbert, sister

of Con Colbert (executed after Easter Week 1916) and

James Colbert, and cousin of Michael Colbert who later

became Brigade Vice 0/C, West Limerick Brigade. The

Woulfe's were great supporters of the Irish independence

movement and their shop and house, from the earliest days

of the movement, became a meeting place for men like Con

Colbert, Captain Ned Daly and others who later figured

prominently in the fight for freedom.

A Company of the Irish Volunteers was formed in

Abbeyfeale in May, 1914. I did not become a member at

the time. The strength of the Company was about three

hundred. A Dr. Hartnett was the chief. organiser, and

an ex British soldier, named James Wall, was one of the

drill instructors. They did not hold together for long

and ceased to exist early in the year 1915, after John

Redmond's speech in the House of Commons in which he

offered the semi-trained Volunteers of Ireland to fight

for the freedom of small nationalities.

Some time later in the year 1915, Ernest Blythe

visited Abbeyfeale and reorganised the Company. I was

one of nine members who joined the Company at its inception.

I was only fifteen years of age at the time. A man named

Thomas Fitzgerald of the Railway Bar, Abbeyfeale, was our

first Company Captain.

A short time previous to Easter Week, 1916, Captain

Ned Daly and Con Colbert visited Woulfe's where I was

employed. They were in uniform.

On Thursday of the Holy Week previous to Easter Week,

the late Batt O'Connor, who later became T.D. for a Dublin constituency,

visited Woulfe's on his way from Dublin to Tralee with dispatches.

He was on a bicycle which he asked me to take past the

R.I.C. barracks for him, in case the R.I.C. became suspicious.

On Easter Sunday morning, the late Pierce

McCann arrived at Woulfe's in a Wolseley motor car on his

way to Tralee. He enquired for the best road to take

there and was advised to take the Castleisland road. I

got into the car and acted as his pilot for part of the

way.

WORK is good therapy. -----. The Church knows it’s true. We are all called to hold the unemployed and the underemployed in our hearts as we pray for work security. There is a dignity in work. It can get us out of ourselves. It restores hope, gets us dreaming again. It makes us sleep better at night. It gives us a reason to get up. It helps us to pay the bills. It reminds us that we are still alive. It gets us through to another job, a better job. It helps us to pinpoint our strengths. It can even become a prayer. Denise Bossert

Benajah Harvey B. H. Carroll.
