Monsignor is survived by his sister-in-law Julia Leahy nee McElligott a native Moyvane, he will be missed by nephews and nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, Bishop Murphy, the Priests of the Diocese. Requiem Mass for Monsignor Leahy was celebrated in Listowel Church on Wednesday 12th October 2011, by a large number of priests from all over the diocese. Listowel Choir assisted by a number of solo singers put on a great performance, the gallery was almost full of singers.

Monsignor Michael Leahy was laid to rest at St Michael’s Churchyard, Listowel. Monsignor Ordained in 1944, was son of Tom Leahy of Knockanure who died in 1945 and Elizabeth Keane who was a native of Ballygrennan and a niece of Old Fr Keane PP Moyvane, she died 1973. Fr Michael served in Nottingham from 1944 to ’47, when he came back to Kerry the Bishop had him as a roving priest who was on call to any part of the Diocese, a telegram was sent to Moyvane Post Office from the Bishop and delivered to his fathers house. Fr Michael was appointed Curate in Tralee in 1950, transferred to Killarney in 1957, then Castleisland in 1971, became parish Priest of Allihies in 1975, arrived in Tarbert in 1976 and was transferred to Listowel in 1986, retiring in 1996. While in Listowel he was involved in the promotion of Nano Nagle School. Monsignor was a great footballer and athlete in his day, the story is often told of his bravery playing for Knockanure. Johnny Walsh is credited with asking Fr Michael to play with Shannon Rangers and they won the County Championship in 1942 beating John Mitchel’s ,score 2-4 to 1-3. Michael Leahy played at right half back on the team. One phrase of Fr Michael was “kick it straight down the middle”. Knockanure Sports was dear to his heart, he was always supporting the event. Rita told me that her father and herself went to Knockanure sports on a very wet 15th of August, the sports were cancelled due to the weather, but they met Michael Leahy and went to Jack Stokes Shop where they were fed and entertained themselves telling stories. Every place that Fr. Michael served he got involved in community activities and was a great leader and unifying force. Fr Linnane reminded us at the Requiem Mass that the glass was always half full or three quarters full in any activity he participated in. John told me that he was with Michael Leahy in St Michael’s and one day Mr O Shea said to him, here are your books and go back to the end of the class, this did not discourage him as shortly after he went to St Brendan’s and excelled. Christy told me at the funeral he remembers well the visit of Fr Michael to his old school in Knockanure, just after his ordination. Anyone who visited Fr Michael at Fatima Home is familiar with his parting words, “Thanks for calling, come again”. Shannon Rangers provided a guard of honour for Monsignor Leahy, a sportsman, cleric, friend and promoter of parish facilities where ever he went.

When Shannon Rangers went to Clare to play a match, they lodged at the Cusack Hotel in Kilkee, they were staying with their own as a Buckley woman from Knockanure was running the establishment.

Fr Michael Leahy is still remembered for his athletic ability at Knockanure Sports , the Knockanure sports which were run annually till about 1929, lapsed for some years , then the Leahy’s and others restated the sports as a flapper meeting around 1943, the worked closely with the GAA and collected funds locally for prizes. John Murphy was secretary for 20 years. Fr Leahy in one day came first in hop skip and jump, 1st in 220 yds, and 1st in 440 yds.
