This Sunday June 5th (Pentecost Sunday) has been designated as a Day of Prayer in Thanksgiving for the Diocesan Phase of the Universal Synod.  On 10 March 2021, the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference announced a new Synodal Pathway for the Catholic Church in Ireland leading to the holding of a National Synodal Assembly or Assemblies within the next five years.

This process has been focusing on the question:

What does God want from the Church in Ireland at this time?

More details on www.synod.ie  The term synod comes from the Greek for ‘together on the way’. Synodality is a way of being Church, it is a spiritual practice and not just a debate about how the church is organised. It is intended to facilitate a wide-ranging process of reflection and discernment. All the faithful are invited to take part in the Synodal Pathway. Recently we had own gathering for Listowel Pastoral Area. Each Diocese is now submitting a document on the findings nationally. A National Pre Synodal-Assembly will take place in Athlone on Saturday, 18th June with a closing liturgy, before the final submission is sent to the Vatican.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT takes place every Wednesday straight after 10.30am. Mass until 1.00 p.m. new adorers welcome from 12 noon to 1pm.  There will be a Donations box half way up the church.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION 2022:  on Saturday, 18th June at 7.00 p.m. immediately after the Vigil Mass of the Feast of Corpus Christi. It will start from the church and go down the Square – up William Street – over Charles Street – down Courthouse Road – and return to church via Church Street. Everyone is most welcome to join us. A special welcome to all of our First Holy Communion children – from our four Primary Schools. We ask them to dress up in their First Holy Communion clothes. It will be led by the cross bearer, the general congregation, the children and then the Blessed Sacrament.

LISTOWEL PARISH CEMETERY MASSES 2022: will take place on: Tuesday - June 21st – St. Michael’s Cemetery at 8.00 p.m. There will be no chairs put out this year at the mass. So please bring your own.

Wednesday, June 22nd – St. John Paul at 8.00 p.m.

Thursday, June 23rd – Finuge Cemetery at 8.00 p.m.

ST. JOHN’S CEMETERY MASS, BALLYBUNION will take place on Friday 10th June at 7pm.

RECENT CHURCH COLLECTION FOR THE UKRAINE Sincere thanks to all who contributed so generously to the recent Special Collection for Ukraine. Nationally, this collection has raised to date over €3.25 million. (Over €135,500 has been contributed in the diocese of Kerry.) The war in Ukraine, and the terrible suffering which has resulted, has seen a tremendous outpouring of compassion and generosity from our parish communities. Your contributions will bring much-needed relief to those in the region whose lives and livelihoods have been devastated.  The funds raised will be used by the international Catholic Church agency, Caritas Internationalis, which is currently operating on the ground in Ukraine and its surrounding areas.  We continue to keep the people of Ukraine in our thoughts, praying for peace and an end to this appalling humanitarian crisis.

LAY PEOPLE TO TAKE UP LEADERSHIP ROLES IN THE DIOCESE OF KERRY We bring your attention to the new volunteer Ministry of the Lay Pastoral Leader in our Diocese. It is being introduced as a response to the changing needs of parish communities. The lay pastoral leaders will work alongside the clergy. Their role will be to lead, co-ordinate and support different aspects of parish life.  If you are interested in this ministry, check it out on www.dioceseofkerry.ie

DIOCESAN CHRISM MASS It is hoped to have our usual Chrism Mass during Holy Week on Tuesday evening April 12th in the Cathedral at 7.00 p.m. It is one of the most solemn and important liturgies of the year. The Mass is a celebration of the institution of the priesthood with Jesus' words at the Last Supper, "Do this in memory of me." During the Mass, those present are called to renew their baptismal promises; priests/ministers and deacons also reaffirm their ministry by renewing the promises made at their ordination. Blessing of the holy oils used in the sacraments throughout the year, which are then given to priests to take back to their parishes is a sign of each parish's unity with the Bishop and the diocesan Church.

Whenever the holy oils are used, the ministry of the bishop who consecrated them is symbolically present. There are no refreshments this year due to Covid.

On May 8, they saw floating seaweed and birds, and then spotted land. But they had arrived at South Georgia amid a hurricane, and for two days had to fight being driven by wind onto an island they had spent weeks desperately trying to reach.

Finally, they came ashore. Three of the six men, including Worsley, hiked across unmapped mountains and glaciers to reach a small settlement. Worsley joined a rescue boat back to get the other three. Shackleton later arranged a ship to collect the rest of the men from Elephant Island, all of whom had survived their own unimaginable hardships.

SUNDAY April 10th IS PALM SUNDAY: The beginning of Holy Week. Palm will be blessed at each of the weekend Masses.

DIOCESAN CHRISM MASS It is hoped to have our usual Chrism Mass during Holy Week on Tuesday evening April 12th in the Cathedral.

More details next weekend.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR UKRAINE NEXT WEEKEND:

Many in our parish community have already established links with charitable projects to support refugees and those remaining in UKRAINE at this terrible time. Recognising these urgent needs, the IRISH BISHOPS are asking that a special collection be taken up at all Masses next weekend. If you have not already contributed, give what you can afford.  People are also invited to support the charitable initiatives of Aid to the Church in Need, the Jesuit Refugee Service & Trócaire.  Trócaire is currently responding to the crisis through its partners Caritas Ukraine and Caritas Poland which have a strong presence in the region and can use resources strategically to the greatest effect.                                                    Míle Buíochas

ARDFERT RETREAT CENTRE: As a result of Covid-19 it was not possible to run any retreat or residential programmes in the Ardfert Retreat Centre.  In August 2020 and following a request from Talbot Grove (now The Grove), Castleisland, a lease was entered into with them for the use of Ardfert Retreat Centre for an initial term of one year. The Grove has now approached the Diocese about acquiring Ardfert Retreat Centre.  Following negotiations, the Diocese wishes to advise that it is proposed to sell the Ardfert Retreat Centre to the Grove.  The Diocese has had a long association with Talbot Grove and their mission is compatible with the spirit of the Gospel. After many years great service, Sr. Elizabeth has retired as director of Ardfert Retreat Centre, and we wish to thank her and indeed her predecessors for their work in the Centre. We also wish to thank the various members of staff, volunteers and the contact people for their work and dedication down the years. Lastly, we thank the people of the Diocese and especially the people of Ardfert for their support of Ardfert Retreat Centre since it opened its doors in 1981. We would ask you to join with us in wishing all in The Grove every success as a new chapter opens in the life of Ardfert Retreat Centre.  Diocese of Kerry, February 2022
