THOUSANDS attended the Memorial Mass for Fr. Tommy O Hanlon in Tarbert on Saturday last, the chief celebrant was Fr James O Hanlon, brother of Tommy. The mass was concelebrated by about 30 priests, also attending were many sisters some who served abroad. The homily was given by Fr. Pat Raleigh of the Columban Fathers who told many little stories about Tommy including his love for sweet cake, justice for the small man and caring for the earth. We were told that his football days had a great influence on him even in the missions. Relations and friends of the O’Hanlon Family mingled with each other in lovely bright sunshine for a long time after Mass had ended, some called to the Presbytery for tea and cake while others later went to the Lanterns to meet and share their remembrances and praise a man who gave his life to the church and betterment of humanity.

DEATH took place on April 1st Holy Thursday of Willie O Sullivan of Tullamore, Listowel. He is survived by his wife Eileen, sons Patsy, Dan and Liam, daughters Noreen, Helen, Bernadette and Ann. Requiem Mass was celebrated in Ballydonoghue Church on Easter Sunday for Willie O Sullivan, the Ballydonoghue Choir put on a great performance with hymns in English and Irish. Willie a great man for the accordion was laid to rest in the family grave at St Michael's Cemetery, Listowel. John Martin Hegarty played the accordion at his graveside. Willie was born in 1920, married 1955, he was called after his grandfather Willie O Donnell who was born 1845. Willie was second cousin to Gilbert O Sullivan the singer.

Taken from Ballydonoghue Book 2010

By Maurice O Mahony.

I want to outline for you the life of a gentle, talented, hard-working man who lived on this earth for almost ninety years, my uncle, Willie O’Sullivan. Willie was born in Tullamore on 17 May 1920, at the height of the War of Independence. He was born the day before Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II. He was the second youngest of five children. He was named after his maternal grand-father, William O’Donnell, who was born in 1845, the time of the Great Famine. Willie’s mother died when he was about four years of age. His grandmother, Johanna, and his aunt, Nora, helped his father, Danny, as best they could. Willie attended Tullamore National School before staying at home to work on the farm. In 1955 he married Eileen Madden. They worked hard together and raised a family of seven, Patsy, Noreen, Danny, Helen, Bernadette, Ann and Liam. Willie was a devoted husband and father.

Willie was a very good farmer. He was a hard worker, up early in the morning, milking his cows, taking the milk to Coolaclarig Creamery where he met his neighbours and talked about the events making the news. He took pride in his work. He was very skilful with his hands, be it working with stone or wood. He was even good at sewing. He liked going to the bog at this time of year. I always admired the way he could clamp a reek of turf. The Latin phrase, laborare est orare, translates as to work is to pray. So, by his hard work he prayed to the God who created him.

Willie liked meeting and talking with people, especially his relatives and his neighbours. Tullamore is a close-knit community, stretching from roughly Eddie O’Brien’s to the Wooden Bridge to Shronowen P. O. This was his world, this was where the people he loved lived. Outside of this he loved meeting friends and new acquaintances in the local public houses, Alan’s in Ballylongford, where he loved to play cards, Mona’s, when he came to a funeral in Ballydonoghue, Jet’s or The Mighty Dollar, when he went to Listowel. Thursday was principally the day Eileen and he went to Listowel.

Willie had a very good sense of humour. He loved listening to a good yarn. He loved music. He played the accordion. He may not be quite as good as his second cousin, Raymond O’Sullivan or Gilbert O’Sullivan as he is better known. He loved going out on the wren with his neighbours and friends and going to the subsequent wren dance.

He was interested in politics. Fianna Fáil was his party. He rejoiced at the successes of Ned Joe and Eamie Walsh, his relatives and near neighbours.

He enjoyed going to a football match. He was a very proud man on an early October day in 1975 when Johnny and Robert Bunyan brought the Sam Maguire and the Tom Markham Cup to the area. I can recall seeing a photograph of himself and Jim Kelly, the postman, holding the two cups. He enjoyed going to Shronowen Post Office and engaging in conversation with Bob and Jane Bunyan.

The one thing I will always remember about Willie was his love of dogs. It was incredible the way he could interact with them. He loved animals. He was close to nature, like St. Kevin or St. Francis of old.

Willie has left this world, his world, a better place for him being here. He died on 1st April, forty six days before his 90th birthday. Pope John Paul II died on 2nd April, forty six days before his 85th birthday. Willie was born a day before Pope John Paul II and he died a day before him, albeit five years older. God should be pleased with him. He now deserves this rest with all his departed relatives, benefactors and friends.

Late Tom Begley

By Pat Brosnan.

August 2010

Sympathy is extended to the relatives of late Tom Begley, the Abbeyfeale old-style blacksmith who had his forge and shop in Bridge Street. When the old-fashioned blacksmiths trade went into decline several years ago Tom turned his attention to making household and farm implements as well as decorative objects all showing the blacksmiths skill and these he had on display in his shop.

It was only a few years ago that he sold me a scythe which apparently he had assembled himself and which of course is a very useful implement.

The last time we met Tom was when our Ceol Luimnigh group was holding a concert in Killeline Nursing Home, Newcastle West where he was resident at the time.

Various members of the Begley families were blacksmiths in Abbeyfeale and Knocknagoshel areas, as my own late brother Con who was also a blacksmith with a forge in Dromada knew most of them in his time.

Tom Begley’s funeral took place at Knockane cemetery near Knocknagoshel. May his soul rest in peace.
