Sean Neligan, Requiem Mass 20th Aug 2012

Today our hearts are heavy because God has taken Sean Neligan to himself, the person we loved and revered very much. We gather in the spirit of Christ who entrusted himself to his Heavenly Father and even in the face of his own death, he gave thanks to God. We too give thanks to God for Sean and for a life well lived and entrust him to the lord.

Our sympathies are with you Stasia, Brid, Miriam and Gearoid and with you Timmy, Tom and Mary who will miss him very much and of course Alex, Clodadh , Anna, Mark and Baby Sé who were very dear to him, not to forget his son Shane who has predeceased him and is an angel in Heaven. Cailiní agus Buachailli Aláinn

Sean’s gentle and kindly presence, his wise counsel and his beautiful smile may be with us no longer physically. We may be angry that the light which brightened so many lives may be extinguished forever. But nothing could be further from the truth.

There is no dying of the light for the Christian. We know that the death of Sean is not the end. There is Easter, Christ is Risen. The Resurrection of Jesus means when we die we do not pass from life to death. We pass from life through death to the fullness of life as expressed beautifully in the symbol of the seed which Christ himself used about his own life and death. Ag Chriost an siol, Ag Chriost an fomhar.

Our baptism is about our belonging to God and to one another. As a sign of our belonging and identity, of our pride and joy we like the Jersey and none more so than the Kerry people. But our Jersey as Christian is the ‘Cota Bán Chriost’, the white shawl of Baptism. We can be sure that Sean has received the Cota Ban Chriost, the fullness of baptismal belonging. He lived in the shadow of the gospel saying, ‘its matters not the first watch or the second watch’ what matters is that we are ready when we are called. Sean lived his life in the shadow and light of the Gospel. His hands were full of good deeds. A gentleman to his fingertips, whose concern in life was to brighten, add dignity and enrich the lives of all who crossed his path whether family, neighbour, work colleagues or students in St Ita’s College, where he taught for 40yrs and attended school there too. He educated the students entrusted to him so faithfully and so generously through his dedication, passion for justice, honesty, commitment to hard work and gospel values. And all he expected from his students was an honest endeavour and be a ‘Tusa ceart’.

A true person.

His students knew Sean’s love of this native tongue and culture. It was deeply engrained in his psyche. Through this natural gift he has left behind a legacy that will remain in the lives and hearts of all who knew him and whom he taught for generations. Gan dabt, ni beidh a leithead aris ann, ta Dia buioch do agus taimid buioch do. Taimid fior bhuioch do as ucht na seoda a bhroinnsé orm, gra, dár teanga agus cultuir Gaelach.

This was not the only seed that Sean sowed in life, there are many. There is one that stands out and will be deeply treasured by the Diocese of Limerick. That is his work with Accord for 20 years in preparing countless couples for marriage to live their lives in committed love. Sean nearly always gave the talk on ‘Handing on the Faith’ in the family at the pre-marriage courses. He emphasized the importance of prayer in the home and having a life giving relationship, never letting the sun go down on your anger and teaching children gospel values by the witness of the couples own lives. Children learn what they live. He bore witness to this in his own family life and in his deep affection for each one of you and your children. And I knew it has been reciprocated even by Alex who brought him sweets lately to make him better since God didn’t appear to be doing it.

The land was Sean’s pride and joy where his closeness to the earth and the animals brought him healing, strength and peace after the stresses of the day at school. On his retirement he had plans but as Robbie Burns said ‘the best wrought plans of mice and men aft gang awry’. His untimely illness took us all by surprise because he was the person who did everything by the book! However when faced with the news after the initial shock he began to let go of what was not essential. He prepared himself for what he thought may be his final journey which was all to sudden and too soon for all who cherished him very much as well as himself and his family, but ‘his soul being pleasing to the Lord’ he has been taken up.

We look on uncomprehending, as we lay him to rest we place him in the gentle healing hands of God where suffering will be no more and where he will stand gloriously in the joy, happiness and peace of his heavenly home. We know that his good deeds go with him and he will find rest from his labours. We pray that all who mourn him especially his family that they may be comforted by precious memories of a life well lived and the legacy of love he has left.

Solas na Bhflaitheas dá Anam uasal.

May he rest in peace.

Eymard was introduced to music at a young age as he accompanied family and friends on St Stephen’s Day on the Wren. He loved style and treats as he would declare today is my birthday. Eymard was always busy, loved to do jobs, even as a child he helped his father plant cabbage, after helping his next-door neighbour with his planting, he took some home and planted them to the surprise of his Dad, as to where he got the plants. Thank you was always on his lips, hundreds were at Knockanure Church to say good bye and thank him for the way he touched so many live.
