Irish Catholic Churches in Montreal

March 31, 2019 Jacques Gagné  Leave a comment

Every year, the city of Montreal hosts a huge St. Patrick’s Day parade that brings people by the thousands to the downtown streets to celebrate their real or imagined Irish heritage. In fact, many Montrealers do have Irish roots that go back centuries.

In 1700, around 130 of the 2,500 families in New France, or roughly 5%, were Irish, and there was massive immigration from Ireland to North America between 1816 and 1860. By 1871, the Irish were the second largest ethnic group in Canada after the French.

The year 1847 was a tragic one as the Irish fled poverty and starvation in their homeland and died of disease before they arrived in Canada. Almost 3900 are buried at Grosse Île, an island in the St. Lawrence River northeast of Quebec City; another 5,000 are buried at the so-called fever sheds near the Montreal waterfront. Many children who became orphans at this time were adopted by French families, but kept their Irish names.

The early Irish of Montreal resided in the central part of the city. Over time, they moved westward, eastward and northward into Saint Ann’s, Saint Mary’s, Saint Antoine’s, Saint James’, Saint Lawrence’s and Saint Louis Wards. They were the primary residents in districts such as Griffintown, Point-St-Charles, St. Henry, Verdun and Ville Émard. Other Irish families eventually moved east into the Rosemount and Hochelaga districts.

Prior to the establishment of St-Patrick’s church in 1847 and St-Ann in 1854, the main churches of the Irish in Montreal were Notre Dame de Bon Secours, the Church of the Récollet Fathers and Notre Dame Basilica.

When I identify a church as being Irish Catholic in this research guide, I do not mean to imply that parishioners were mostly of Irish descent. It does suggest that, at one point in time, a minimum of 10% of the acts of baptism, marriage and death records addressed Irish immigrants or their descendants.

Especially during the early years, acts of baptism, marriage and death that took place at most of the smaller parishes in the Montreal region were registered in the records of Notre-Dame Church. For example, a baptism or marriage might have been held in Griffintown, but the act would have been included in the Notre-Dame-de-Montréal records.

The attached research guide lists the churches in which the Irish presence was appreciable, or parishes that were inaugurated by members of the Irish community. The years in brackets reflect the year I was able to ascertain as being the beginning of the Irish-Scottish-British presence in these Catholic churches. I reached my conclusions following several years of research on more than 3,000 books addressing marriages and baptisms at the Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) in Old Montreal.

This research guide includes descriptions of the parishes where Irish Catholics attended church in the Montreal region, as well as a list of the cemeteries where many of them were buried. It also includes a list of recommended books and articles, and a list of repositories including archives and museums, online resources and other local sources of information. It is part of a series of research guides to Irish family history resources across the province of Quebec.

Valentine Trant McGillycuddy seems to have been one of the good guys.

He was born in Wisconsin on February 14th, 1849, but he was from Co Kerry on both sides. His father was a Daniel McGillycuddy, late of Tralee, his mother Joana Trant from the end of the Iveragh Peninsula, at Portmagee.

The two met on the crossing to America. She was Catholic, he was Protestant

Description

The Benn-Walsh family, Walsh baronet and Baron Ormathwaite, had their principal seats in Cumbria and also at Radnorshire in Wales. Lord Ormathwaite's estate in county Kerry amounted to almost 9000 acres in the 1870s while he held 2,206 acres in county Cork. Much of it was purchased from George Ogle, heir to the Anglesey estate in the late 1760s and from the 3rd Earl of Kerry. Sir John Benn-Walsh was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Duagh, Kilcaragh, Kilfeighny and Kilshenane, barony of Clanmaurice as well as a townland of 1900 acres in the parish of Galey, barony of Iraghticonnor, county Kerry at the time of Griffith's Valuation. In 1840, the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books indicated that the agent was Joseph Gubbat, of Mount Street, Dublin. At the time of Griffith's Valuation he held land in the parishes of Aglish, Athnowen and Magourney, barony of East Muskerry, county Cork.

This article deals with rentals, a term also used in North America for hire cars,  but here referring to records of rent payments by tenants on Irish estates,  particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries.  They are a potentially valuable source of family history information that is often overlooked, mainly because very few are available  on-line.

Prompt for 2019, week 1 — “First”.

My great-grandfather, William Cornelius (aka Willie) Colbert, was the eldest of 13 children.  He was baptized on 31 January 1877, in Moanlena, Mahoonagh Parish, Co. Limerick, Ireland, to Michael Colbert and Hanora Josephine McDermott.[1]

Subject: Re. North Kerry World War 1 Dead.

 Hi. Jim.

It was with interest I read the piece on the memory of those killed from North Kerry while serving with various Countries in World War 1.  My uncle Daniel J Culhane, Leitrim East, Moyvane was one of those brave young men who gave his life in that war. He left Moyvane in his teens for America and

was drafted  into the U.S Army 210th Infantry, 78th Division. He was killed in action on Oct, 25th 1918 in the Argonne Forest, France. He was  23 yrs old. I have photos and cuttings from U.S newspapers about him as he was only married a couple of months, and was dead for 9 months

before his wife was informed.

Sincerely John Culhane

(Ballyduff)

I have been working on my family tree and made a little discovery in the "Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1912." My great grandmother was Margaret Kennelly and her sister Bridget married Michael Dillane/Dillon. In their daughter's baptismal record dated 21 Dec 1879, Helena or Ellen has a marriage listed to Philip Enright from Abbeyfeale in 2012. At the time of the 1901 census, his mother was a shopkeeper and two of his brothers were bakers. Philip had 5 brothers that moved to America and 2 were priests. There is a family burial in the Square in Abbeyfeale at the Cistercian Graveyard. Both Philip and Ellen died in the 1950's. Would you happen to know if they had any children?

A will left in Franklin Co., Va. by William B. Curtin in 1828 leaves land to "my 3 children, by Betsy Ferguson."Elizabeth Ferguson Hambrick signed for this inheritance.

I have found no further information on a Curtin family in Franklin, Va. during this time. The only reference I have found is in "Franklin County Virginia 1786-1986 A Bicentennial History" by John S. and Emily J. Salmon

It says" Thomas Richardson, a laborer, was tried for forgery as well as for stealing in 1807.In the first instance he was accused of having "Stolen from William Curtain Two pair of shoes of the Value of four dollars" on 14 April 1807; when he was found guilty the Franklin County Court sentenced him to "receive fifteen lashes on his bare back...immediately...and that the Sheriff of this County carry him to the common Whipping post, ..."

Letter (from the 1940s?) written by J.J. Kenneally
Thu Sep 29 02:08:15 2005 (Edit Post)
Sharon Hollingsworth At a website about the history of the village of Newtownsandes, County Kerry, Ireland I found a letter written by J.J. Kenneally but the name is spelled Kennelly in the letter.
In the letter he mentions Ned Kelly and his book about him.

You can read it here--

http://www.geocities.com/dalyskennelly_2000/jjkennelly.html

When you go to the homepage http://www.geocities.com/dalyskennelly_2000/ you can click into the guestbook where a lady writes in and gives thanks for seeing the letter from her grandfather, "J.J. Kennelly (Kenneally in Australia)" and confirms some of the facts. I did some checking in Corfield and elsewhere and see that the family facts are correct and the fact of him running for office. From what I can figure the year of the letter must have been between 1945 and 1947 since he says that the Duke of Gloucester is still here (as the Duke was Governor General of Australia between 1945 and 1947). Also he mentions "president De Valera" who served in the position of prime minister of Ireland between 1937 and 1948.
In August 1945 Kenneally did the "enlarged and revised" version of his "Inner History of the Kelly Gang." Kenneally died in 1949.

Bill Denheld Dear Sharon,
That is a beaut find. Interesting that to read the letter and ' Mat' is a well to do farmer at Eleven Mile Creek. No doubt this kindled JJK's interest in the Kelly saga.
Keep up the good work Sharon, we all appreciate the resource.

Regarding http://www.ironicon.com.au , during the past month my internet service provider had a server crash and they re-instated settings according to an old copy they had. The result of this meant- intending visitors could not access the site/s.

Please revisit the above URL and save that to your Favourites list as this will be the only way to the other sites as well. If anyone has a problem to access please let me know.
With thanks, Bill

Sharon Hollingsworth Bill, thank you very much for your comments. A little appreciation sure goes a long way! I saw over on the ironicon links page where you have mentioned me under the KC2000 link in reference to the forum. Maybe a few people who wondered where I vanished to can now find me.
It seems that not only am I "inimitable" I am unsinkable like Molly Brown (on the Titanic)!
I really appreciate the recognition.
Now I just hope I can keep on finding these great little nuggets of information like the Kenneally letter! It is getting harder and harder to find good stuff as I have searched so darned much these past few years!

Fri Sep 30 06:57:36 2005 letter from 1940 (Edit Post)
Lola R Sharon I have passed this onto JJ's Granddaughter, Mary, as it does not read quite right to me.
Fri Sep 30 17:00:28 2005 (Edit Post)
Sharon Hollingsworth Thanks Lola, I had wondered what Mary Kenneally would make of it. The other lady who was a granddaughter who visited the guestbook seemed to agree with some of the family facts, but I would like to know just where this history site got the letter from! They give no provenance or background to the letter, just listing his name under families that had ancestral ties in the area and thus I clicked on.
Hope we can solve the riddle! Let us know what she says.

Sharon

certified copy of vital record (Death Certificate)
Maurice died of "accidental Drowning" at Feters hot springs in Sonoma County
California where he had been employed as a chef.
The body was found in the swimming pool by an attendant who first noticed a
mans clothing and then saw the body on the bottom of the tank. The body was
recovered and every effort was made to resuscitate the man but all to no
avail. Life was extinct before the discovery was first made.
McGann was a native of Ireland, 46 years of age and is survived by a wife and
four children. The wife resides at Feters with her husband but the children
are grown and live in San Francisco where they are employed.
It is believed that McGann had gone to the bath for an early swim before the
patrons of the resort arrived and in his first plunge probably struck the
bottom as there was a slight abrasion on his forehead. No one knows how long
he was in the water before being discovered but it is not believed to have
been very long. The body was removed to the parlor of undertaker H.F. Bates at
Somona where coroner Phillips held an inquest.

Additional Comments:
Maurice was born in Ireland Nov. 1873, but soon there after came to Tiffin
Ohio where he was raised. He was married to Laura Caldwell of Wyandot Ohio.
Maurices parents were William McGann of Abbeyfeale, Limerick, Ireland and Mary
Fitzgerald also of Limerick Ireland. He only had 3 (known) children. Harry,
Madelon & Ralph. All died in California. Records have also been found with the
surnames of 'Began' and 'Megan'. Feel free to contact me!

Hundreds flock to Timothy Kennelly's funeral at Ealing Abbey

Posted by Paloma Kubiak Feb. 2010

Hundreds of mourners came to pay their last respects to a brave and talented teenager who lost his life trying to save his friend.

Ealing Abbey was filled with friends and family of Timothy Kennelly who drowned off the North-East coast of Brazil after trying to help his 'After Death' band mate who was struggling in the rough waters.

The 18-year-old's funeral which took place on Friday February 12th 2010 saw hymns sung by pupils of Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in Shepherd's Bush, where Timothy attended, friends from West Ealing where he grew up, members of St Benedict's Ealing Abbey where he was an alter boy and family from Ireland who made the trip to say their goodbyes.

Timothy's twin brother, Diarmuid read out a eulogy, smiling as he remembered his brother but holding back the tears as he recalled the final moments of his life.

Diarmuid said: "After many disappointments, finally Timothy and I were born, Timothy three minutes after me; it was a very special day when we arrived.

"On his first day at St Gregory's, Timothy cried and when we went to Cardinal Vaughan, our dreams came true as it is here that he started to become interested in music and taught himself how to play before he joined 'After Death'.

"He always had a grin on his face and a natural ability to lift spirits in any company.

"I was lucky enough to watch him grow into a mature young man.

"He had love for everyone and was closely involved in the church as an alter boy and reader.

"He was never afraid to take on a challenge or other people; he had a fantastic sense of humour shown through his outrageous fancy dress wear.

"Timothy decided to take a gap year and he worked at Kantar Operations where we trained together and no matter what he did, he loved it.

"He originally auditioned as a singer for 'After Death' but was given position of bass guitarist and backing vocalist.

"It was a very happy time, he went to rehearsals and had studio time to get an LP done.

"When the band went on tour it was the opportunity of a life-time and he did all the over-time to save money.

"This is 18-years of events; they were very happy years.

"The support our family have received has been phenomenal and we could never have done it without your support."

Reverend Dom Peter Burns who was the presiding celebrant, said: "It is not long ago that Timothy was involved in the 7pm mass and we offer this mass for him today.

"He was off on his travels and we couldn't know that he was making his journey back to God.

"Timothy had his first Communion and Confirmation here and made a great group of friends who stuck together.

"His family are overwhelmed and wonderfully supported by all the love and care received over the last few weeks.

"We remember all those qualities that made him, such as his love of heavy metal, knowledge and sense of fun, pride in his origins and his extraordinary untidiness; that was what made him Timothy.

"The real Timothy was when he saw Leon in distress out in the sea knowing he wasn't a good swimmer but saw his friend was in trouble."

Timothy Jeremiah Kennelly died on Thursday January 21,2010 along with his band mate Leon Villalba of Islington.

21st January 2010

Remembering Timothy Kennelly, aged 18, who died on 21 January, 2010.

Bassist Mr Kennelly and bandmate Leon Villalba, aged 21 - both musicians from metal band After Death - died while swimming off Atalaia, Brazil.

The five members of London-based band were on tour in Brazil playing local venues for just over a week, and were the support act for the band Master.

Drummer, Barry Mr O'Connor, who went to school with Leon and had known him for 12 years, said he had been the "driving force" behind the band.

"He was the nicest guy, so organised and he really pushed the band to get to this sort of position," he said.

He said Mr Kennelly, from Ealing in west London, joined the band six months ago but it felt like he had known him for years.

"Tim straight away made a massive impression... he was full of information, loved a laugh and was on cloud nine. He was so much more mature than 18, a great guy all round."
