MID WIFE: The relative lack of midwives in the US is often cited in tandem with the nation’s higher maternal mortality rate: 30.34 per 100,000 in the US in 2021 compared to 4.5 per 100,000 in the UK. Many factors contribute to the maternal mortality rate in the US, the highest in the industrialized world, and both the Commonwealth Fund and the US Department of Health and Human Services have proposed an increase in the number of midwives as part of a potential public health initiative to address these challenges. But why are so few midwives in the US to begin with?

Barry, Edward

31 March 2006

The late Edward ’Ned’ Barry

Lisselton native Edward ’Ned’ Barry, who died at the age of 89 in Listowel Hospital on Monday, March 13, 2006, was a kind and loving man who never relinquished his strong love of life despite a life that was defined by much heartache.

Born on June 21, 1916, to Patrick and Mary Barry of Ballyegan, Lisselton, he attended the local national school as a young boy.

One of nine Barry children, many of whom emigrated, he took to working on the family farm as a young man, eventually inheriting the holding.

Marrying local woman Brigid ’Maimie’ Kennelly in the 1940’s the couple settled on the Barry farm where they set about family life, bringing four children into the world - daughter Mary and sons, twins John and Tom and Patrick.

Mr Barry was devastated by the loss of his wife in 1967 and brought all his energies to bear on raising his sons - a challenging task for a single parent at that time but one he fulfiled with absolute love and dedication.

Unbearably, he was to also bury two sons - Tom and Patrick - through separate tragic circumstances.

In 1976 Mr Barry remarried, to Doreen Foley, who was a former district nurse and soon retired from farming - moving to Urlee in Lisselton in the late 1970’s.

They shared many wonderful years together and Mr Barry cared for her when she took ill in recent years - her niece Norma, who suffers from a debilitating condition, also lived with the couple and Mr Barry was no small help to her as well.

Doreen sadly passed away in 1998 and Mr Barry again was forced to stoically accept his grief.

His many grandchildren were of great comfort to him in later years and he was overjoyed at the birth of a great-grandchild.

He will be remembered both locally and further afield for many things, not least his association with the national sports.

A keen GAA man, Mr Barry was a star player with the Ballydonoghue team in his youth, in his playing days - winning three North Kerry Senior Championships and one Junior North Kerry Championship with them in the 1940’s.

Indeed the GAA would remain one of his life-long passions and the collection of local memorabilia he pieced together over the years brought him to the attention of the national body in later years - and some of his items are now to be seen in the Croke Park museum.

He will also be remembered as a warm, sincere and friendly man whose door was always open, ready with conversation, tea and sometimes a drop of the stronger stuff if it was needed.

Guiney, Joe

01 June 2006

The late John Guiney

After a short illness, John Guiney of 61 Charles Street, Listowel, and late of Moyvane South, passed away at his home on May 14 2006, aged 86.

He slipped gently away in the arms of his loving family as his devoted wife, Sheila, his sons and daughters kept a bedside vigil as he embarked on his final journey. John was truly loved in North Kerry his death has deeply saddened his many friends. He will be sorely missed.

John grew up in the beautiful countryside of Moyvane. He was educated at Moyvane National School and later progressed to St Michael’s College, Listowel.

After his schooling he went to work with the Board of Works throughout the county and spent many happy years with them, making many friends along the way. John finished his working life at McKenna’s of Listowel.

He had many interests, including gardening, fishing, music, current affairs and sport.

His first love was football and he played with distinction for Moyvane in the late 1930s and early 40s, winning two North Kerry Senior Championship medals.

The president of Moyvane GAA Club, Gerry Brosnan, spoke at his graveside and sang a song called Up the Boro, which pays tribute to a winning Moyvane North Kerry Championship team, in which John featured prominently.

While John’s late son Brendan captained Emmets to County League success, he remained a Moyvane man first and foremost.

Although housebound for his last few years, he continued to enjoy the company of this neighbours and friends from all over North Kerry who visited regularly.

He enjoyed nothing more than to while away the night exchanging stories and reminiscing about times past.

John will be greatly missed by his wife, Sheila, by his sons and daughters, by his grandchildren, his nephew Lawrence and by his extended family, all of whom loved him dearly. John was a true Moyvane gentleman.

McEllistrim, Catherine

01 January 2001

Ballylongford lost one of its most popular parishioners with the death of Mrs Catherine Mc Ellistrim (nee Kennelly) of Main Street.

Catherine had been unwell for a while.

Coming from a family with a strong farming and Gaelic Football tradition Catherine made an enormous contribution to the local community and was held in the highest esteem by everyone in the parish.

All of her sons have distinguished themselves on the playing fields with the local Ballylongford team while her nephew Tim Kennelly was a member of the great Kerry team of the 1980s.

There is also a very strong tradition of greyhounds in the family with the family having a considerable amount of success both at the greyhound track and at coursing.

People of the area turned out in huge numbers to pay their last respects at the removal of her remains from Lynch’s Funeral Home in Ballylongford to the local St Michael’s Church and again at the Requiem Mass and internment that took place to Lislaughtin Cemetery.

Catherine is survived by her husband Michael sons, Tim, Michael, Maurice and Richard daughter Helen and extended family. (Mitchelstown)

The John and William Brennan in Guhard in 1901 were my grampas, Edmond/Edward's father (John) and uncle (William).
One of those two Eugene's in 1901 was another brother of John and William, all sons of a Philip who was married to a Mary Broder/Broderick from Farranastack. That's were the Broder/Brodericks come into the picture.

I don't have a Michael Brennan in Guhard in that generation---but maybe I do! and maybe you've found another brother of Michael.
Another Eugene, son of John and brother to my grampa Ed inherited the farm in Guhard from his father John.
This Eugene was listed as head in 1911 and father John was still living there.

I don't know where my Enrights are "from", one of them married one of my Guhard Brennans.
There was a Maude Enright alive-quite old in her 90s I think, in 2001 who was a descendant of this family.

Where are my Sheehys from???
My grampa's mother was Margaret Sheehy , married to John Brennan of Guhard.

Grampa came here to Chicago with 3 Sheehy siblings from "Duagh". ( I don't know if it was town or townland Duagh, or somewhere else in Duagh parish.) My understanding is that they were first cousins, so I think but have not proved that my gg Margaret Sheehy Brennan must have been their aunt, so she must be from Duagh, too. But not proved yet.

My Howard great grandmother (wife of John Howard) was a Mary Walsh, daughter of John Walsh--of Ballyhorgan/Lyrecrumpane, that must be the family you have identified.

Are you a descendant of the Michael Kennelly son of Margaret Brennan?

Just to let you know that there were 85 Brennan families in Kerry in 1901.
Pat was in Ahabeg, Lixnaw;John and William were in Guhard, Lisselton, Eugene in Lacca and Eugene at Lahardane also Lisselton;
Fr Brennan was Parish Priest in Listowel over 50 years ago.
The present Parish Priest of Listowel Cannon Linnane may a relation of the Brennan's of Guhard.

Brennan artist of Ballybunion may be related .

Michael Kennelly died some years ago an old man his mother Was Margaret Brennan a daughter of Michael Brennan of Guhard?. Michael's Grandmother was Walsh she was born c 1850. Most Michael Kennelly's 14 children went abroad.

Pat Hannon was in Ballyduhig in 1901.While Matt and John and Matt was in Listowel.
Pat H may be related to Hannon Auctioneers of Listowel.
I had part of their family Tree, some yrs ago but will search sometime for it.

16 Howard Families in Kerry in 1901, as far as I can make out none live in Lixnaw, Listowel or Duagh.

Ballyhorgan is in Lixnaw Parish.
Some Walsh families live in Lyrecrompane which is in Duagh Parish.

Mary Howard Baptised in Ballybunion as Ballybunion is a tourist resort she may be there for her health or with a relative or working there.

I Know of the Brennan's of Guhard and Behan Butcher.

Where are your Enrights,Broder and Sheehy from.

Very difficult to trace although I do have my gramma's birth certificate.
It says Ballyhorgan, Bromodera. Parents John Howard and Mary Walsh.
(Somehow, lyrecrumane figures in to this family's whereabouts or origins, too.)
Her brother John Howards' baptismal cert was found in the RC Lixnaw parish records.

There was an Ellen Howard of Bromodera who married a Patrick Hannon in 1877 in the Lixnaw Irremore RC Parish records.
This Ellen's father was John Howard of Bromodera and Patrick Hannon was son of John Hannon of LIstowel.
We believe this Ellen Howard was probably aunt to my gramma Julia.

Ellen and Patrick Hannon had at least two sons, John (1877) and Thomas (1880). Thomas was born in Ballyduhig.

There was also a Mary Howard sister of my gramma Julia Howard. We think that a Mary Howard born to John Howard and Mary Walsh in Duagh in 1877 may be her. Even thought the baptism records shows her born in Duagh, her Baptismal records are in Ballybunion RC Parish.

Our Mary Howard (according to my gramma's 1936 Chicago obit) was Mrs. Dennis HIckey in 1936.

Did you ever know or hear anything of the Brennans of Guhard, Lisselton.
Do you know Behan the Butcher at the Lisselton crossroads, by chance.

Researching: Brennan, Sheehy, Howard, Walsh, Broderick, Broder, Enright, and many more........

When my grandmother Julia Howard (later Mrs. Edw.Brennan) arrived in
Chicago in 1907
her passenger manifest (Ellis Island) states she was going to her
"Cousin Nora Ahern" who was living at 1343 Watson Ave. Chicago.

Traveling with gramma from Listowel was Catherine Dillon.
Catherine Dillon also stated her destination was "Cousin Nora Ahern"
of the same Watson Ave address in Chicago.

Catherine Dillon listed her father as Thomas Dillon of LIstowel.

Does anyone have either this CATHERINE DILLOR or NORA AHERN in their
Sr. Mary Estelle was born Margaret Cunningham in 1898 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (now Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Her parents were Richard Cunningham and Brigid Dore. At the age of 17 she and her older sister Johanna joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, Kansas where a distant relative, John Francis Cunningham, was a bishop. Sr. Mary Estelle worked as a nurse for many years at St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvedere, Illinois where she died in 1987 aged 89.

Johanna, Sr. Mary Estelle's sister, became Sr. Mary Ellen and worked in El Paso, Texas for a time before moving back to Concordia to work in St. Anthony's Hospital there. Sr. Mary Ellen died in Concordia in 198?

What would the world have been like without Andrea Bocelli, Italian pop, opera, and classical singer? With millions of infants having been victim to abortion, the blind international music sensation has revealed that he too could have been one more abortion statistic. The "I am Whole Life" project has produced a YouTube video with Bocelli...

ABORTION:

Kermit Gosnell. He’s the abortionist on trial in Philadelphia for killing a 41-year-old woman and murdering seven healthy, viable babies. He delivered the babies alive and then used a pair of scissors to cut their spines!

I was in the courtroom last Tuesday. I was but a few feet away from this man. It was a gut-wrenching experience. It all sounded like the Nuremburg trials when Nazis were held accountable for the atrocities committed in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Dachau.
