Sandes, Arthur (1793–1832), soldier and administrator, was second among six sons of Henry Sandes, of Glenfield, Co. Kerry, and his wife Alice, daughter of Arthur Browne of Ventry, Co. Kerry. All six sons served in the British army during the Napoleonic wars. Serving in the commissariat department, he was present at the battle of Waterloo. After the peace of 1815, he left the British army on half pay.
In 1817 Gustavus Hippisley, a half-pay officer and nephew of the knight of Glin, raised a force of officers and NCOs which was then sent to South America to aid Simón Bolívar. Sandes was one of many Irishmen who volunteered to join this expedition,

WEDDING: The marriage of Mr. Thomas Henry Booth, an assistant clerk in the West Ham Guardians offices, with Miss Mary White, eldest daughter of Richard While, of Glenagore. Athea, Co. Limerick, took place at St. Antony’s Church. Forest Gate, on Wednesday. The bride had been for some time a nurse at the West Ham Infirmary, and it is a very popular match in Poor Law circles. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. Father Matthews, and appropriate music was played upon the organ, Mendelsohn’s Wedding March” pealing forth as the bridal party left, the church. The bride, was charmingly attired in cream cashmere, trimmed with old Limerick lace. She also wore a Brussels net veil and a spray of orange blossom. Her chief ornament was a gold bangle of unique, pattern, the gift of the bridegroom, and she carried a magnificant shower bouquet of Lillie and lilies of the valley. The bridesmaids—the Misses K. Ambrose, E. F. Nunn, and N. Mclnerney— were very tastefully dressed in cream serge costumes prettily trimmed with gold braid, with quaint picture hats to match. They carried handsome bouquets, the gift of the bridegroom. The bride entered the church on the arm of her cousin, Mr. C Shine, of Athea, and was given away by him. The search engine for the Tithe Applotment Books can be found at: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp
The following National Archives of Ireland link will bring you to an index showing the surname Walsh twice leasing property in Leitrim. One of these is Patk Walsh. The second entry does not include a first name for the Wash farmer: https://is.gd/4Tl2jB
If you click on with Walsh name, you’ll be brought to a copy of the original Tithe Applotment Books record where their full entry can be found, though as you’ll see, the page is faded and can be difficult to read in spots.
Once the image comes into view you’ll see that Patk Walsh is Number 7 in the Tithe book, which shows he farmed 37 and 1/2 acres of land in Leitrim. The tithe record also lists the quality of the land that Patrick had farmed, with 1st quality being the best and 4th quality the poorest. There is also a column in the record for “Inprofitable,” that is, unprofitable land which did not generate any income from farming. The quality of the land was based on how well the land could support the growing of oats and wheat. See: https://is.gd/KKxVTC
The tithe record shows that Patrick farmed 16 acres of 3rd quality land and 22 and ¾ acres of 4th quality land. Also part of his holding were 19 acres of inprofitable land. The amount of tithes Patrick had to pay was 1 Pound, 7 ½ Pence. The question is, could this Patrick Walsh have been John’s father? There’s really no way to tell with any certainty from the Tithe Applotment Book record alone.
If you scroll back up to the first name in the tithe book you’ll see the entry for Maurice “Kinnelly,” whose tithe payment was 3 Shillings, 9 ½ Pence, based on the quality of his 5 ¼ acres of the 3rd and 4th quality of land that he farmed. Maurice may have been related to John Walsh’s mother, Catherine Kennelly. Catherine, as you know, was Patrick Walsh’s wife.
To view the second Leitrim Walsh entry in the Tithe Applotment Books, go to the following National Archives of Ireland link: https://is.gd/bw1JRw
You’ll see two facing pages of this tithe book, which is very faded. The Walsh entry is on the right-hand page at Number 33. He was recorded with another landholder whose surname is very difficult to read, but looks like, “Bunty,” though I may be incorrect about the name. Together they held 38¾ acres of land in Leitrim and were tithed 1 Pound and 7 Pence based on the 3rd and 4th quality of the land they farmed.
If you go back up this tithe page to entry Number 27, you’ll see that Martin Kinnelly had farmed 23 acres of land and was tithed 9 Pence and 4 Shilings.
Now go over to the left-hand page of the tithe book to Number 15, and you’ll see the entry for Enright and Hanrahan, who farmed 52 ¾ acres and paid tithes to the amount of 19 Shillings and 11 and 1/3 Pence.
Just below the Enright and Hanrahan entry you’ll see the listing for a farmer whose surname appears to be Hanin and another farmer named Enright. They are at Number 16. At Number 17 is “Mau” (Maurice) Enright.
Then, going down to the last entry on the left-hand page at Number 25, you’ll see the tithe entry for the Widd (Widow) Kennelly.
You may want to conduct searches on your own in the Tithe Applotment Books to see what other Enrights and Kennellys may be found in the Civil parish of Murhur.
I now wanted to see if I could find either John or Julia Walsh in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for Kerry was completed by the year 1852.
Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate individual members of a family, such as husband, wife, and children in a household residence. Those named in the valuation were individuals who paid to lease property, such as land, houses, and outbuildings. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman for the owner. This person was called the “Immediate Lessor.”
You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Mary Halloran
Mary Halloran was born on 11 March 1846, in Askeaton, Limerick, Ireland, the daughter of Denis Halloran and Bridget Sheahan. Her brother, Patrick Halloran, was born on 16 March 1848.
Her father died before 1853. Only her mother was listed on the Griffith Valuation 1853.
Bridget, Mary and Patrick immigrated to United States before 1860.
Mary Halloran married Michael Joseph McKenna on 13 April 1866, at St. Aloysius Church; Washington, D.C. They had ten children together. She died on 16 September 1906, in Chicago, Illinois.
Con Brennan b 1832
Given birth was Sept 18, 1832 and died Feb 11, 1905. My only clue was his obituary said he was from Kerry County.
He came to America about 1848 or so as he was married to Mary Harty (daughter of John Harty and Nellie Ryan) in 1853 in Tennessee. He eventually came to Iowa and lived there until his death. The story we were told was he came to America with a couple of brothers (not necessarily at the same time) but they were separated by the Civil War and never heard from again. I do not know his parents nor siblings names.
He had six children, their names: Jeremiah, John, Mary Elizabeth, Anna J, Katherine Elizabeth and Michael William. Research shows that the Brennan's of Kerry came from around the Sneem area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Steve Cunningham in the U.S. tells me his great-great-grandparents were Cornelius Cunningham (born about 1836 in Co. Kerry) and Bridget Kennelly (place of birth unknown but she was a daughter of Patrick Kennelly and Mary Mullane) who lived with their family in the Athea area of Co. Limerick, not far from Kilbaha. It is possible that Steve's great-great-grandparents were the same couple whose daughter Mary was baptised in Newtownsandes in September 1868. In case there is indeed a connection between Steve's Cunningham family and the Cunningham family which includes the aforementioned Mary, here's a little more detail on Steve's family: Bridget emigrated to the U.S. in 1906 with her son Denis, his wife Catherine (Katie) O'Sullivan and their two young children, Mary and Cornelius. They settled in Kansas City, Kansas where Bridget died in 1922. Denis and Katie later moved across the state line to Kansas City, Missouri. If anyone has further information on Cornelius and Bridget, an email in the first instance to Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com would be much appreciated.

LECTURE: IGS Knight of Glin memorial lecture
No. 1 Pery Square Hotel, Pery Square, Limerick, Sept 21st at 8pm. €10 entry.
Irish Georgian Society. Tickets from eventbrite.ie or igs.ie
The Architectural History and Restoration of Abbey Leix with William Laffan
Abbey Leix, originally site of a Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century, is one of the great Irish country houses. Over the last few decades it has been restored by Sir David Davies, President of the Irish Georgian Society, making it an appropriate subject for this annual lecture named for his predecessor in this role. The talk, by William Laffan, explores the architectural history of the house built by the de Vesci family in the 1770s, using drawing by the various architects who have played a role in its construction, notably James Wyatt, and also examines the landscape of one of the most intact demesnes in Ireland, home to the oldest oak tree in Ireland. It was through the combined scholarship of the Knight of Glin and John Harris that Abbey Leix was correctly identified as the house as the work of Wyatt – it had erroneously been attributed to Robert Adam – and the lecture acknowledge the seminal, and continuing, role that the Knight has played in the study of Irish art and architecture.
William Laffan is a curator and art dealer who has published extensively across a wide variety of cultural topics. The Cries of Dublin (2003) was selected as a book of the year by Roy Foster in the Times Literary Supplement; as was Miscelanea Structura Curiosa (2005) in The Irish Times by Frank Callanan (‘a delight;). Thomas Roberts, Landscape and Patronage in Eighteenth-Century Ireland (2009, written with Brendan Rooney) was described by Toby Barnard in Apollo as ‘a landmark in writing on Irish painting’. In 2014 he co-authored Russborough: A Great Irish House, Its Families and Collectors and the following year was historical advisor to the landmark exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, Ireland, Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690-1840. He is currently researching a monograph on Nathaniel Hone (1718-84).
Copies of the new book on Abbeyleix (Abbey Leix: An Irish Home and Its Demesne by William Laffan)will be available to purchase at the lecture.

Kennelly/ Conners
I really do not know much about my Kennelly's. My g. g. grandfather John W. Kennelly was b. 2 Aug 1835 in Ireland. His death certificate says his father was Martin Kennelly b. Ireland and his mother
was Mary Windle also b. in Ireland. He m. Johanna Conners before 1857 in Ireland. Could be Connors. Johanna was b. in Ireland abt 1839. Her death certificate says her father was John Conners and her
mother was Ellen, both b. Ireland. They had two children b. in Ireland that survived the journey to the US. Micheal b. Sept. 1857 and Mary b. 1860. Family stories say two children died on the trip
over. Daughter Ellen b. in 1864 and I'm not sure which country she was b. in.
They supposedly came to this country abt 1862-64 but I can find no record of them until the early 1870's in Rochester NY. Supposedly John was naturalized but there were no naturalization records for
him in Rochester.
Supposedly my g grandmother Frances Bridgete was b. 1868 in Erie Pa. where I live but I can find no record of the family here either.
Frances m. Thomas Geraghty in Rochester. Supposedly one family was from Limerick, and the other from Tipperary but no one knows for sure.
If you have any knowledege of this family I would be grateful for any information you are willing to share!
,
my g-grandfathers Joe Kennelly's death cert says his father, John was
born in Pittsburgh. I can't be certain of its accuracy there, but John's
wife, Catherine Sullivan is listed as being born in Ireland.
My g-grandfather was Joseph, born in Pitt., in 1891. He may be the link my
grandfather spoke about to the mayor Martin H Kennelly of Chicago.
All that my grandfather remembered was that as a young child he had an uncle
who was an Attorney in Chicago who would visit them and before leaving buy them
a carload full of groceries

> I didn't find anything relative to my research on your site, but that may
be because I'm so ignorant of my forebears. I know they were from the
district of Ballyduff, registrar's district of Listowel, according to my

Flavin / Collins / Costelloe
What I am still looking for is children of John and Mary (nee Collins) Flavin/Flahavan, (Both born around 1800) The only child of theirs that I have is my great great grandfather Denis

please let me know. Oh yes, Denis Flavin/Flahavan married Catherine Costello, about 1850, she being the daughter of John and Margaret nee Kelly Costelloe, sister of Hanora and Margaret Costelloe,
from Ballybunion area.

Hi Jer,
I really do not know much about my Kennelly's. My g. g. grandfather John W. Kennelly was b. 2 Aug 1835 in Ireland. His death certificate says his father was Martin Kennelly b. Ireland and his
mother was Mary Windle also b. in Ireland. He m. Johanna Conners before 1857 in Ireland. Could be Connors. Johanna was b. in Ireland abt 1839. Her death certificate says her father was John
Conners and her mother was Ellen, both b. Ireland. They had two children b. in Ireland that survived the journey to the US. Micheal b. Sept. 1857 and Mary b. 1860. Family stories say two children
died on the trip over. Daughter Ellen b. in 1864 and I'm not sure which country she was b. in.
They supposedly came to this country abt 1862-64 but I can find no record of them until the early 1870's in Rochester NY. Supposedly John was naturalized but there were no naturalization records
for him in Rochester.

My son Tom Roche and family leave in a couple of weeks for Ireland to seek
roots. His grandmother, Margaret Agnes Kelly Roche, was born in Listowel in
Aug,
1879, to Tom Kelly and Mary (?) Kennelly. Her siblings included Mary Kelly
Behan, Nora Kelly Hannon, Catherine Kelly Doyle (who remained in Listowel)
Paddy Kelly,(who inherited the Kelly farm) and several others.
Tom and family will be visiting offspring of the Kellys and the Doyles. It is
difficult to follow your family tree, without some dates or other clues.
Please let me know if you can find a Mary Kennelly among the siblings of
Pat or Jerry Kennelly.
Mary Anna Roche
I have only just started tracing my family tree so I don't have a great deal
of information as yet but here is what I have found out so far.
Sarah Maloney sailed from County Clare in 1883 at the age of 20 on the
sailing ship 'Assaye' with her mother Sarah aged 55 and brother Michael aged
25. In 1881 an Ellen Maloney aged 21 sailed for Australia on the
'Blairgowie' also in 1881 another Ellen Maloney aged 25 sailed for Australia
on the 'Glamis'. Also on board was James Maloney aged 19 and Thomas Maloney
aged 18. Sarah married Alfred Henry Peel on the 22.9.1886 at St. Mary's
Cathedral Sydney. A Michael and Ellen Maloney signed the marriage
certificate as witnesses. Sarah and Alfred had 7 children (5 boys & 2 girls)
and my father also Alfred was born on the 6.6.1889. Sarah died on the
11.8.1937 aged 74 and Alfred died in September 1954 aged 89. They are buried
together in the catholic cemetery Botany Sydney in row 9 grave no. 481.
Michael Maloney married a Johanna McNamara and had 6 children all died
young, the last a daughter Johanna who was the last survivor of the family,
died on 9.5.1924. Michael & children died from Myelocythaemia. She is buried
in the Curch of England cemetery Woronora N.S.W. I have nothing at all
regarding Sarah's father, he must have died in Ireland as he is not on any
ships passenger lists. Also nothing about Sarah's grandparents. Do you have
any information that would help me?
Regards Allan Peel
Thanks for your note.
The point of my letter of 22/2/2001 was as follows:-
1. To ascertain whether you had any information to link my greatgrandfather with Bridget Mulvihill shown on the Kennelly families list. The date of c1840 would seem to be about right as
grandfather John was born about 1847 in Newtownsandes. We had already established that the only other John to have married a Bridget ie Bridget Kirby was not related because they did not have a
son John, according to the information supplied by the P.P. at Moyvane in 1990.
2. To see what relevance the name Folan/Forin/Foran had to our family. And whether Bridget Morrissey's parents Thomas Kennelly and Hannah Forin could be connected to grandfather from the records
obtainable in Newtownsandes.
My full name is Christopher Charles Kennelly, the name Christopher comes from my maternal grandfather Christopher L'Estrange, born in Mulligar Westmeath. Charles comes from my uncle Charles Henry
Kennelly killed in France in 1918.
I don't know if Jerry snr.worked in Cork. I know he came to Skibbereen around 1907/8. The only person I know of Sr. Baptist who resides in Cork. If you come this way again be sure to let yourself
known to me.
Tom Kennelly of Cobourg was my ancestor. I'm curious for details on this woman.
My Kennelly's were from Limerick. Wonder if we're related.

I am still trying to figure out at what point the Hanrahan's
became cousins to my Flahavan's.
You asked about the Lawlor's---I know very little about how they are
connected to my Flahavan/Flavin family. In Delaware Ohio in the middle
1850's they were attending baptisims, marriages and sponsers to various
Flavin family. Fanny Lawlor apparently was married to a John O'Naile
(O'Neil) A Mary Lawlor was married to John Moran, whose daughter Johanna
Moran married Patrick Flahavan/Flavin in Delaware Ohio in 1858. All born
Ireland.
Seems William Hanrahan of Newtownsandes had a son John. He in turn had
another son John Patrick. John Patrick Hanrahan was listed as cousin to my
great grand uncle Timothy Flavin/Flahavan. I can only assume that somewhere,
there was a Flahavan/Flavin and Hanrahan marriage. What a confusing mess I
have here.
If you hear of any Hanrahan Flavin connections, please let me know.
what I am looking for is: John and Mary
nee Collins had Denis Flahavan born Feb 11, 1821. Other probable children of
John and Mary are: John, James, Johanna, Bridget, Patrick, Mary. All born
1820 to 1840.
Denis Flahavan/Flavin married Catherine Costelloe. That would have been
sometime around 1850 to 1853. Now there is the possibility a first marriage
was to Mary Mahoney in 1846. I would like to see if buried there is one Mary
Mahoney/Maloney Flahavan/Flavin who would have died between 1846 and 1852.
Children born to Denis Flahavan in Ireland, Kerry would be John born about
1852 or 53 and Michael born 1852 to 1853. Maybe others prior to these two, I
don't know. The rest of the children (12 more) were born in Ohio , So I
already know about them
I have a couple of copies of letters that were written from another Flavin
researcher's great great grandmother back in 1853. She (Anne Scanlon) was
writting to her daughter Ellen Scanlon Shanahan, who was in America , Ohio.
The area she wrote from was Ahanagran. Anyway, she mentions her son in laws,
Patrick Flavin/Flahavan and James Flahavan. Also interesting is the mention
of a Margaret Kennelly, Richard Scanlon's wife. Darby Enright is also
mentioned. As is John Mahoney, who took Anne Scanlon's grandson, Robert
Flahavan/Flavin to America, and both of them disappeared, this being in 1854.
These folks are somehow intertwined with my Flavin family, we believe. The
researcher and I have yet to figure out the relationship. I tell you about
this, because I thought it interesting that the Kennelly name was mentioned.
No mention of my Costelloe or Hanrahan family though.
Hello Again Jer,
I ask because on my
Hanrahan (John Hanrahan, son of William Hanrahan) who died in Ohio in 1875,
it says born in "Newtownsandes, County Kerry".
Cork Family; My great uncles Jeremiah and John were the first and third bishops of
Harrisburg, PA. Their father was the founder of a Catholic college in (I
believe) Philadephia where the family lived until Jeremiah's appointment as
bishop of the "new diocese", There is info on the Web about the bishops. I
have photos of them and some belongings. The Shanahan family of my
ancestors came to the US.from Cork in about 1825, according to me records.
The ancestor from Ireland was named Sylvester Shanahan married to an Ann
Hand. Their child, John married a Margaret Donavan. The latter were
parents of the two bishops.
I am searching for the ancestry/family of Timothy Kennelly; born in 1797 possibly in Ballylongford, Kerry Co., Ireland; married Catherine O'Connor abt 1830+; removed to Bulloch County, GA USA abt 1835 until 1857 and migrated to Winnesheik CO, IA where he died. I would be happy to share any info with you on these lines. Thanks, Judy.

Knockalougha School built 1879. Teacher Thomas Casey. On 14th of June
1898 Thomas was fined £1 for neglect of timetable. James Dower was
monitor c 1900, questions were asked because Dower was a relation of a
teacher, no preference to teachers relations was allowed.
A Catherine Lyons was informed that Commissioners do not interfere in the
private affairs of teachers.
I am able to trace some relatives to Ireland through a cousin, Mrs. Jim Lyons (Rita Casey) Lyons. Mary Agnes Casey (daughter of Dennis G.,1848?-1909, Kim's great-great grandfather) and Rita Lyons
are related in the following way; the grandfather of Rita (Casey) Lyons, John Casey was the cousin of Dennis G. Casey (1848?-1909, Mary Agnes' father). John Casey's son, Tom Casey (Rita's father)
taught 35 years in Duagh, Ireland. As for Tom Casey's other children, two were priests, and two were nuns; the others died before completing their education. Please see below.
From a 1935 letter from Rita (Casey) Lyons to Mary Agnes Casey:
My dear Agnes: ....we left my Father's (R.I.P.) home at Knockalougher just four years ago and bought this farm ["___eamfort" [Illegible], . Cork, I.F.S]. We celebrated my sister's Silver Jubilee, in Queenstown Mercy Convent, last Sunday week. (16th) -Sister Angela is her name-she was Josephine Casey in the world. My brother; Father James Casey, is on a visit with us as present. He belongs to the English Mission but he had been very ill and he is on sick leave for a long time...Information on the back of a photo dated 1929 mentions other family members: Celia Dower (a cousin, teaches in England), myself, Jim with Baby, Aunt Annie, Mundy Stack (... will be ordained in June), and Madge Dower, ...Angela, Kathleen, and Desmond.
Rita and Jim Lyons had several children and in 1935 they were the following ages. Desmond, 14 (August) is their eldest son; Kathleen, 13 (November); Angela, 12 (October), and James Joseph, 7 (March). I do not know if they are still living.

DANAHER

ORIGINS OF THE DANAHER NAME
The Irish surname name Danaher is believed to be an Anglicized version of
the Gaelic surname O’Danachair or O’Duinneachair and derives from the
Gaelic personal name Duineachar which signifies ‘descended of Duineachar’.
This personal name means a ‘loving man’, the first element of his name being
derived from the old Irish ‘duine’ meaning ‘person’. Another explanation is
that the surname derives from the ancient pre 10th century Gaelic
"duineachaidh", meaning pure, but it has to be said that this is not
accepted by many scholars.
Danaher belongs to Co. Limerick: it originated in north-west Tipperary,
where the chief was lord of a territory near Nenagh until dispossessed
following the Anglo-Norman invasion.
Many, perhaps the majority of Irish surnames, originated as a nickname for
the first chief of the clan, effectively the first name holder. Some of
these nicknames were "robust" to the point of physical directness, and
others in the tradition of nicknames may well mean the reverse of the
translation! In this case we also have confusion with the English surname
Denny.
LIMERICK HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Much of County Limerick was part of the ancient Kingdom of Thomond, while
parts of the west of the County was part of the Kingdom of Desmond. In the
mid 9th Century the Vikings took control of Limerick City and retained it
until the 11th Century when they were defeated by the O’Brien chieftan Brian
Boru. Because the Norse did not use surnames there is little evidence of
the Viking heritage among the family names in the area.
From that time it was the seat of the O’Briens, rulers of Thomond until the
English took control of Limerick in 1174. Following the Norman invasion the
county was granted to the DeBourgs, ancestors of the Burkes, the Fitzwalters
and the Fitzgeralds, The Norman influence is still evident among the names
which are still common in the county, Fitzgerald, Fitzgibbon, deLacey,
deCoursey, Woulfe and Wall.
CROMWELL
In 1649 Charles 1st was executed in London and Cromwell came to power. A
brilliant and brutal general he came to Ireland that year and quickly
exercised control. In 1641 the English Parliament had passed ‘the
Adventurers Act’ a money raising venture that allowed land to be confiscated
from disloyal Irish Landlords and sold to investors. The Cromwellian
campaign in Ireland cost £3.5m. To make this back he had similar legislation
passed in 1652. Sir William Petty carried out a government survey to
establish the land available. In all, 11m out of a total of 20m acres was
confiscated and reassigned, mainly in Dublin, Kildare, Carlow, Cork, Armagh,
Down, Antrim, Laois, Offaly, Meath, Westmeath, Tipperary, Waterford and
Limerick. This was a massive shift in land ownership. The benefiting
‘adventurers’ were mainly London merchants or soldiers in Cromwell’s army.
Many became absentee Landlords for whom the newly acquired estates became
sources of profit.
FAMINE
The county was badly affected by a local famine in 1820 caused by potato
blight and by the great famine in 1845-47. According to Samuel Lewis (1837)
the population, in 1821, was 218,432; and in 1831, 248,201. Almost 17% of
the County’s population emigrated between 1851 and 1855. Almost 30,000
people died between 1847 and 1850. The population was 330,000 in 1841
falling by 21% in 1851 and a further 21% to 152,583 in 1871. By 1891 it had
stabilized at 160,000 and is currently 122,000.
THE “ LEGEND” OF THE DANAHER’S ARRIVAL IN WEST LIMERICK
In the middle of the 17th century, two brothers named Maurice and Phil
Danaher came to the parish of Rathronan, nowadays called Athea. Tradition
tells us that they came from north Tipperary “gan brog gan stocai”, fleeing
from Brodel’s persecution-a Cromwellian Officer who was rounding up hundreds
of young people to be dispatched to the West Indies as “indentured labour”
i.e. as slaves. In their flight they delayed at Rathronan where they
ultimately got a tenancy of two holdings from the Earl of Devon. Maurice
Danaher was allowed to settle at Mothar Glas at the eastern side of
Glenagower. Philip Danaher settled at Cnocatrasna-Choile. The land here had
been broken-in and was one of the two places in the parish, which was
designated as “gniomh” or “plough land”.
After Maurice Danaher’s death the tenancy of the farm at Mothar Glas passed
on to his son Daniel. Among the latter’s family was a son named Daniel. He
went to Spain where he was studying at Salamanca. He spent some years in
Spain in the Spanish army. It is not known when Daniel went to Spain, but he
returned to Ireland in 1731. He brought with him from Spain several books
and a wife. Soon after coming to Ireland he settled in Castlemahon in the
town land of Lios an Uisce. He got a tenancy of a farm from the Landlord
Viscount Southwell when he found that Danaher could teach a hedge-school
quickly started up and soon the Landlord’s sons gained entry to University.
Daniel Danaher was followed in Lios an Uisce by his son Patrick who carried
on a hedge-school there as did Patrick’s son John and one of this John
Danaher’s sons named Daniel who did not occupy the Tenancy of the farm.
GLENAGOWER.
I have been able to trace my own Danaher family line back as far as Philip
Danaher who was born around 1786 in Glenagower and died on 7th August 1884.
He lived to be 98 years old. He was married to Bridget Sheehy, born 1795 and
died 22nd February 1864 aged 69 years, and they had at least 11 children as
set out in 'My Descendent Chart' for Philip Danaher & Bridget Sheehy :

i) John (b<1830) took tenancy of Monemohill around 1852 and married Margaret
Cummane
ii) James (b1837 took tenancy of Knocknaboola and married Bridget Sheehy
iii) Maurice (b<1830) took tenancy of Moyreen and married Marie Doherty
iv)Hannah (b1839) married David Quaid

v) Tim married Ellen Nolan
vi) William married Anne Cummane, Clounlehard West
vii) Bridget became nun in Kilrush, Co Clare
viii) Philip never married
MONEMOHILL (‘MONEYMOHILL’)
The earliest mention of the townland that I have found is in Begley’s
“History of Limerick Diocese Part 2 - relating to the 1584 Survey of
Forfeited lands ‘when Ullig Wall held Dunmoylan including -----------
Monemoell with castle’.
The Civil Survey was a record of land ownership in Ireland in 1640. Its
purpose was to facilitate the transfer of forfeited property to adventurers,
members of the Cromwellian army, and government. It has land descriptions as
well as the names of proprietors and their religion.
According to this survey the lands referred to as Monemohill were bounded on
the north by Finnoe, on the west by Clounlehard, on the east by Duncaha and
on the south by Glenagower. The proprietor was Richard Stephenson an ‘Irish
Papist’. The area owned by Stephenson was given as ‘300 ploughlands’, about
3,900 acres, and the total value was given as £40. There were no Danaher's
listed for this townland.
GRIFFITHS VALUATION
By the time of Griffith’s Valuation in 1852 John Danaher, my
great-grandfather, held 197 acres at Mone(y)mohill, the largest holding in a
townland which totalled 624 acres. The owners of the three largest holding
from 1833 had disappeared !. The landlord was Col. Richard S Bateson,
presumably a relative or brother of Thomas Bateson ( Sir Thomas Bateson had
no sons, only two daughters ). (Richard S Bateson held 1,394 acres in Co
Limerick valued at £1,123. Richard S Bateson was a career army man,
Lieutenant Colonel and Honorary Colonel 1st Life Guards with an address at
Knightsbridge Barracks, London. He was married twice, and seems to have had
a distinguished career in the British Army. )
John Danaher was married to Margaret Cummane and they had a large number of
children as set out in the 'My Descendent Chart' for John Danaher &
Margaret Cummane which can be viewed by clicking on the attached link ;
(When you open the PDF file you may have to enlarge or reduce the image to
view)
Notes on these family members ;
i) Bridget Danaher married John ‘Boss’ Danaher, aged 38, on 21/11/1876 at
Kilcolman parish church. The witnesses were James Danaher and Catherine
Purtill. John Danaher was married previously to May Woulfe who had died.
ii) Philip Danaher married a local girl Maria O’Sullivan’ from Tenakilla,
Ballyhahill. For a time they ran a pub in Shanagolden before emigrating to
Australia ( Queensland ) circa 1881/2 where they have numerous descendants
some of whom have come to Ireland in recent years to find their roots.
iii) Johanna married John Hastings from Moyreen and had a large family.
iv) Margaret married James Cleary from Templeathea East. According to Phil
Cregan he owned 400 acres and had 10 women coming in every day to milk !.
vi) Patrick ‘Pat’ married Nano Dillon and acquired the Danaher farm at
Woodcliffe. They had at least 7 children including Dan, Matthew, John,
Catherine, Josephine, Hannah and Mary.
vii) Daniel married Margaret O’Callaghan from Feenagh but they had no
family. They raised a niece of Margeret’s, Nora O’Callaghan who later moved
to Dublin and married an O’Carroll man who had a pub in North Dublin and
they lived in the Malahide area. They had one retarded daughter. As Dan had
no descendants he eventually left the Monemohill Farm to his nephew Dan
Danaher from Woodcliffe.
viii) John became a Medical Doctor and practiced in London until his
untimely death from rheumatic fever at the age of 34 on 8th August 1900 at
home in Monemohill. My mother told me a story about her mother attending to
her sick brother and hearing the ‘banshee’ crying on the night he died !.
See attached appendix relating to his funeral attendance.
ix) Catherine - no information on her - did she become Mother Gertrude in
Kilrush.
x) Nora - born in 1870 married Thomas Lane sometime after the 1901 census.
He was 15 years older than her. They had 5 children including my mother.
GRIFFITHS VALUATION 1852
The table below shows the number of Danaher households in each county in the
Primary Valuation property survey carried out between 1848-64. The highest
number of Danaher households recorded was in County Limerick.
Clare 9, Kildare 1, Limerick 26, Limerick City 2, Tipperary 5.
ARTICLE FROM CORK WEEKLY EXAMINER DATED 16TH OCTOBER 1931
THE DANAHER’S
West Limerick and North Kerry Family
With far flung genealogical line
A brief account of the history of this re-markable family may be of interest
to many who have doubtless wondered at the prevalence of the name in North
Kerry and West Limerick, and may have some knowledge of it's very many
intersections. We have it from tradition that the first of the Danaher’s to
settle in West Limerick were two brothers, Phil and Maurice, who fled from
the borders of Cork and Waterford at the time of "Brodels Persecution" as it
was called, when he (Brodel) volunteered to procure thousands of slaves for
the English Govt. to be sent to work on sugar plantations of the Bermudas.
Those two boys ran away barefooted, it seems, from their home, and never
stopped until they reached Rathronan, better known today as Athea in County
Limerick. They settled, Phil at Parkmount and Maurice at Glenagower, and
both of these places are consequently the cradle of the name as far as West
Limerick and North Kerry are concerned.
At Parkmount, Phil married, and there were 5 sons of the union; Tim, John,
William, Maurice and Michael, besides possibly a daughter or two. (I'm only
the messenger!)
Tim (the son) got married to a Miss McCoy, and retained Parkmount, of which
place the family line is still in possession. Tim’s son Dan passed the place
down to his son of the same name, whose son John is the present possessor.
John son of Phil went to North Kerry, where his sons Dan and Tim held
possession after him. There is no male representative of either today, and
the family name is extinct at Kilarda, North Kerry. Tim, who married a Miss
Roche, was the father of one son and five daughters, amongst whom were three
who became the mothers of the Trants and O'Connells of Listowel and the
Danaher’s of Parkmount, Athea. William, Maurice and Michael the other sons
of Phil of Parkmount, spent their lives at Knocktane Valley, Templeathea,
where they are individually represented today by the Hanley’s, the Danaher’s
and the Tierney’s. One of Phil’s daughters became Mrs. Woulfe of Cratloe
West, and was mother of Phil Woulfe of that place, whose descendants are
still in possession. So much for the Parkmounts wing of the family.
Maurice Danaher of Glenagower, was father of a family there amongst who was
Phil and Mrs. Tierney, late of Templeglantine. Phil got married to the
sister-in-law of the late William Clery of Templeathea, and became the
father of Maurice, Phil, William, Tim, Pat, Dan and James, besides two or
three daughters one of whom was a Mrs. Quaid. The sons of Phil Danaher all
became settled in West Limerick, at Glenagower, Moyhaglass Ballyhahill,
Shanaglden and Loughill, where they are respectively represented by members
of their families.
The two original Danaher’s of Parkmount and Glenagower, by their action in
taking flight from Waterford, proved to the world that they at least would
never be "willing slaves" and today (1931) it would be next to impossible to
enumerate their descendants and connections (times thousands in 2001)
The Danaher’s of today (1931) have developed a marked amount of ability.
Maurice Danaher barrister-at-law, Miss Bridie Danaher, now Mrs. Lindsay, is
an MA and was lecturer in German at Galway University. Father Danaher of the
Oblate order is a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr James Danaher is an MD in
England. Daniel Danaher late of Parkmount was a University graduate when
such advanced learning was uncommon in Ireland, and his brother Timothy (my
grandfather) has written attractively in verse. There is hardly a Celtic
name on the roll that has not become joined to the name Danaher.
The families of West Limerick and North Kerry are only a small part of the
name, which is also found in Waterford, Cork, Clare and Galway, and in fact
outside of Ireland the sun does not shine on a settlement in which the name
Danaher is not to be found. They have taken their places with distinction in
the Legislatures of the world, and are to be found in the ranks of
professionals as well as being engaged in all legitimate pursuits in lands
of their adoption.
Needless to say DANAHER is a Hibernian name.

Appendix 1.2
John Danaher & Margaret Leahy, Athea ===Line
Australian descendents
Philip Danaher who was born 6th February 1853 son of John Danaher and
Margaret Cummane, Monemohill was married at age 23 to Marie O'Sullivan aged
21 who was from Tenekilla, Ballyhahill. Marie was daughter of Rodger
O'Sullivan a farmer from Tenekilla. The best man, Philip Purtill was a first
cousin of the groom, his mother being a sister of John Danaher. According to
the marriage certificate both bride and groom were described as farmers.
However I believe they operated a pub in the local village of Shanagolden
between 1875 and 1882 when they emigrated to Australia. Four of their
children were born before they emigrated and were baptised in Shanagolden
Church. They were Margaret b 1877, John b 3rd November 1877, Patrick b 31st
December 1878 and Roger b 29th April 1880. I could not find birth
registration for Margaret and she could have been a twin for John !
Eight more children were born in Australia including Philip, Daniel, Kit,
Ruby, James (x 2), Mary, and Peter 'Joe'.
According to Michael Danaher, Philips grandson ‘Soon after arriving in this
country, Philip farmed for 2 or 3 years, then within a few years joined the
railway, quickly advancing to Station Master. He controlled many stations
within a 60 mile radius of Brisbane. He was a tall man, over 6 feet,
retiring around 1918.’
I have received a very comprehensive list of descendants from Michael
Danaher which can be viewed from this PDF file :
Siobhan Bouma has also supplied me with some great pictures of her family
and newspaper cuttings of some notable Danahers.
KEVIN DANAHER, OBITUARY
Kevin Danaher
PJ Gillan
The Guardian,
Saturday 27 April 2002 14.14 BST
The Irish folklorist Kevin Danaher, who has died aged 89, popularised the
study of folk life largely by lecturing, writing and making television
programmes. His 1967 Telifís Éireann series, The Hearth And Stool And All,
depicted the Irish countryside as it would have appeared at the turn of the
20th century.
The son of a schoolteacher, Danaher was born in Athea, Co Limerick, and
became interested in the traditions of Irish rural life while studying
archaeology at University College, Dublin. After graduating in 1937, he
studied folk life at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig, before his work
was cut short by the outbreak of the second world war.
Within months of joining the Irish folklore commission (IFC) in 1940, he was
recruited to the Irish army as an artillery instructor. By the time he
returned to the IFC in 1945, he had completed his MA thesis on Irish house
types, focusing on vernacular architecture.
He devoted the next four years to field work in Ireland - recording singers,
musicians and storytellers -and spent the 1952-53 academic year as a guest
lecturer in Irish language, literature and tradition at the University of
Uppsala, Sweden. He was to compile a substantial pictorial archive, much of
it consisting of his own fine photographs, as well as plans, diagrams and
drawings of traditional farmyard tools and household utensils.
One of the most impressive examples of applied folk-life devised by Danaher
is Bunratty folk park, close to Shannon airport, where buildings typical of
a dispersed rural settlement are complemented by a village settlement. A
centrepiece of the folk park is a Shannon farmhouse, transplanted to make
way for a runway extension and restored under Danaher's supervision.
He was also adviser to the trustees of Muckross House museum, and maintained
a friendly interest in the Ulster folk and transport museum at Cultra,
County Down. When the IFC was transferred to University College, Dublin, in
1971, he became a lecturer in the new department of Irish folklore. An
outstanding teacher, he gave unstintingly to ensure that his students
fulfilled their potential.
Danaher was a member of the Irish National Monuments Advisory Council, the
Folklore Council of Ireland, was active in the working group of the European
Ethnological Atlas and served as president of the Society for Folk Life
Studies. From 1965 to 1980, he was general editor of the department of
foreign affairs' Irish Life And Culture series, and, from 1960 to 1971,
edited the Irish Sword, the Military History Society of Ireland journal.
His publications include Ireland Long Ago (1962), The Year In Ireland
(1972), Ireland's Vernacular Architecture (1975), A Bibliography Of Irish
Ethnology And Folk Tradition (1978) and That's How It Was (1984).
Danaher retired in 1983, and is survived by his wife Anna and two sons.
Kevin Danaher, folklorist, born January 30 1913; died March 14 2002

Reference was made in the House of Commons in 1895 to an incident at Athea
involving John Danaher and a man called Shea whereby John Danaher was being
accused of attempted murder and was being referred to as a 'land grabber'. I
have not been able to establish if this is my grandfather or not !. See web

Extract of email from Jamie Kelly, Athea relating to this John Danaher :
'In the meantime that I have some info on John Danaher you mentioned. He
owned a large farm of land in Gortnagross, Athea (it ran in a north - south
direction, crossing both the Athea - Abbeyfeale road and the Dromadda road).
That family were known as The "H" Danaher's. It is said that John H. Danaher
(prob. the man mentioned in your attachment) came to Dromadda in 1850 (just
so you know "Dromadda" was the old name given to the townlands of
Gortnagross, Coole, Clash, Keale, Cratloe and prob. Tooradoo...it was used
in the 1833 Tithe records). He married the widow of John Maurice Roche who
held a good portion of Gortnagross. John H. Danaher was evicted by the
national Bank for £1800 in 1894. He died in Newcastle Hospital in Feb 1907.
It is said that a John Danaher, Athea took over the lands in April 1894
after J.H. Danaher was evicted. I am not sure were they related but I do
know that there was a connection with your father. Had your father a brother
Jack? or another called Jim, who was a doctor in England?
I also got some info on John H. Danaher's house...according to Thady Hunt
(Coole West - a man I get alot of my info from) that it was "a gentleman's
residence." He remembers hearing that there were weights on the windows so
they could be easily opened & closed! I aslo found out that the farm was
divided by the Irish Land Commission in 1935 and small portions of the land
were given to small farmers in the area.

Funeral Of Dr Danaher
The funeral of this much regretted young man took place on Sunday last from
his brothers residence in Monemohill. Dr Danaher, who, since taking his
degrees had been in practice in London, some time ago contracted rheumatic
fever, from the effects of which he never rallied despite what medical care
and skill can do. The immense cortege that accompanied the remains to the
family burial ground at Ardagh testified to the love and respect in which Dr
Danaher was held by his neighbours.
