DEATH on Monday 18th December 2023 of Nora Lynch (nee Flaherty) Glasha, Athea, and formerly of Gortdromagouna, Knockanure, in her 104th year. Predeceased by her husband Jack, her parents Timothy & Hannah Flaherty, brothers Michael, Tim, William, Patrick, John & Tom, her sisters Mary and Hannah. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons Jim and John (New York) and daughter Hannah O'Connor, (Glenquin, Strand), granddaughters Angela & Yvonne and grandson Jason, daughters in law Concepta and Bridie-Ann, son-in-law Diarmuid, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Requiem Mass for Nora was celebrated at St. Bartholomew's Church, Athea, on Thursday 21^st of December. Burial afterwards in in Holycross Cemetery, Athea.

DEATH of Maureen Sweeney (née Flavin), Blacksod, Belmullet, and formerly of Knockanure, Listowel, in her 101st year, on 17th December 2023. Predeceased by her husband Ted, grandson David, sister Teresa Kennelly, recently deceased daughter in law Margaret, niece Mary and recently deceased nephew Mike Kennelly. Mother of Ted, Gerry, Vincent and Emer, also survived by her daughters in law Rita and Doreen, son in law Gerhard Schlueter (Albany, New York), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, the Staff of the Sonas Tí Aire Nursing Home, and many friends. Funeral Mass on Friday at 12 noon, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Aughleam, followed by burial in Faulmore Cemetery. Funeral Mass  available for viewing on Friday at 12 noon on McDonnell Funeral Directors Facebook page with all other funeral services available for viewing at 8pm on Friday evening.

 

Maureen Sweeney, whose weather forecast changed the timing of the D-Day landings during World War II, has died aged 100. Maureen Sweeney, nee Flavin, born at Knockanure who was 21, her forecast of an impending storm from Blacksod Lighthouse in 1944, played a key role during World War II supplying with weather reports. At 1pm on 3 June 1944, Maureen was first to forecast a severe Atlantic storm, which led to a change of plan by the Allied Forces and D-Day was postponed to 6 June, by General Dwight D Eisenhower. In 2021, Maureen Sweeney was awarded a special US House of Representatives honour for the role she played in changing the course of the conflict.

Predeceased by his parents Donie and Kit, brother Brendan, infant brother and sister, Joseph and Marie.  Husband of Olive,  dad of Yvonne, Jennifer, Brian, Suzanne and Dermot, granddad to Kayleigh, Dylan, Aleisha, Robyn and Katie, missed by his sons-in-law Shane, Denis and James, his brothers Jerry, Mike, Liam, PJ and Eddie, aunt Mary, uncles Tom and Packie, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, and many friends.

 

Requiem mass for Teddy was celebrated at the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane, on Wednesday, followed by burial afterwards in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane.

DEATH of Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, died Dec. 1 2023 at age 93. Her husband’s ancestors came from Knockanure.

 

MOYVANE GAA Tribute; It is with heavy hearts that we share of the passing of our valued clubman and friend Teddy Keane. Teddy had a long playing career with Moyvane during in which time he won a County Junior Championship in 1982 along with a Senior North Kerry Championship medal in 1983. Teddy was also our club referee, a role which he performed with great distinction. His greatest accolade was in administration. He served in many roles over the years including chairman, secretary, treasurer and pro of our club. He was also the first pro of the North Kerry football Board.

 

To the present day Teddy continued to be an active fundraiser for the club and overall an outstanding clubman who was always available to help out his club in any capacity.

 

We offer our sincerest sympathies to Olive, Brian, Dermot, Yvonne, Jennifer, Suzanne and the extended Keane family.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

 

DEATH on December 2nd 2023 of Sr. Helen Hartnett FMA, (Salesian Sisters, Caherdavin. Formerly of Granagh, Derraulin, Bruree, Listowel and South Africia.) Predeceased by her parents Mary and Patrick and brother-in-law Kevin. A member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, she died at Burlington House, Woburn Sands. Sister Mary is survived by, sisters Sr. Veronica (Peggy), Kathleen (Mulvihill, Shronowen, Listowel), brother Jackie (Kilbaha), sister-in-law Teresa.  She will be sadly missed  by her family, and extensive circle of friends in Ireland and England. DEATH: on 9^th February 2023 of  Fr. Tim Galvin SPS, St Patrick’s Missionary Society, Kiltegan, Brosna & Abbeyfeale. Fr Tim’s sudden death is a great personal loss. For his parishioners in South Sudan his loss is incalculable. Fr. Tim, has served in Riwoto, South Sudan, for the Saint Patrick’s Missionary

Society since 2014. He had a great network of friends and supporters in Abbeyfeale and right around West Limerick and North Kerry. 

DEATH of Seán Broderick, 5 St. Ita’s, Convent Street, Abbeyfeale and formerly of New Street, Abbeyfeale, on February 6th 2023, in his 97th year. Seán, husband of the late Vera, survived by  daughters Marie Therese and Siobhán, sister Ita, sons-in-law Diarmuid and Andy, grandchildren Muireann, Cathal, Róisín, Gearóid and Niamh, sister-in-law Gemma, nephews, and nieces. DEATH of Patrick O'Connor, Ashgrove, Listowel and late of Clounprohus, Moyvane on January 27th, 2023, son of the late Daniel and Bridget. Patrick  is survived by his sisters Kitty and Ann, uncle Timmy, brother-in-law Rodger, nephew Colm, and extended family. Following Requiem Mass in Moyvane Church Patrick was laid to rest at Murhur Graveyard.
